The Iyakei & Oboke Tour with the Hashikura-ji Extension takes about 7.5 hours.
The origins of Hashikura-ji Temple date back over 1300 years, and with visiting you will learn about the establishment of this sacred place by the esteemed monk Kobodaishi, along with how and why this place is uniquely revered by both Buddhism and Shintoism.
The forested temple grounds are fairly large, composed of several monuments, secondary shrines, and a large bell tower (which you will be instructed in how to properly ring yourself). The architectural components of the main temple buildings are noted for their exceptional detail, covered with exquisitely intricate carvings that are sure to impress anyone.
The temple is located near the top of Mt Hashikura, at a position about 300 meters (1000 ft) above the valley floor, so the views are quite impressive. Access is usually done by a 10 minute gondola ride from the parking area below.
(Note: once at the top of the gondola, to reach the main upper temple building it is necessary to walk up and back down a large staircase, as shown in one of the pictures here. If you have trouble with walking stairs, then you may not be able to access the main upper building, but several other structures and shrines of the site can still be visited without climbing the stairs, including the main lower temple).
Alternatively, instead of using the gondola, it is possible to hike up and/or down via a trail that is mostly through the forest and not especially difficult, which also gives an added chance to go past a few extra impressive structures (including the main temple gate) which would not be encountered if going only by gondola. The hike up takes about 45-50 minutes, and the hike down takes about 35-40 minutes. If wishing to hike one or both ways instead of using the gondola, please let us know, though it may mean that the total tour time may take a bit longer.
